Thailand! (My First Post....Finally)
Hey all,
I've been away for more than a month as many of you know. Sorry for not posting before, but I'm really lazy when it comes to this kinda stuff. It's not entirely my fault though; China has blocked blogger as well as Facebook. I am now using a wonderful proxy that allows me to circumvent the Great Firewall of China. So first, a quick update on what's been going on in my life. I was in Chiang Mai, Thailand for almost 3 weeks taking a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certification course. We created lesson plans and taught Oral English classes to Thai university students. The difference is that each class only had about 8-10 students in it while in Bejiing I will be teaching classes of 40-60 university students!! AHHHHHH!! Other than teaching, I did some cool activities in Chiang Mai like white water rafting and riding elephants! (See attached pictures). I also got many Thai massages. Altogether there are 35 VIA (Volunteers in Asia) volunteers this year. Not all go to China, some are going to Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma, and Laos. It's been great to meet so many people who are also adventure-minded and looking to do something that is off the beaten track. Most of the volunteers in the organization are recent college grads, but not all! There is one China volunteer who is 65 years old! See Mom, I expect you to apply to VIA soon! I've really bonded with a lot of people here. In Chiang Mai I became super close to my roomie, Ai, a Vietnam vol. I'm going to miss her a ton, but she promised to visit me in China (you better!). Anyway...hmm what else can I say about Thailand? Well, the people are super friendly, English-speaking, and will stop their cars for you when you're crossing the street (basically, opposite of China). Also they drive on the left hand side of the road and the steering wheel is on the right hand side of the car, which is super confusing. Also Thai food is AMAZING (spicy) and super cheap. Ok that's enough about Thailand....next post CHINA....dun dun dun
